Unfortunately, Marcelo Garcia is taking a break from the event this year.

Roger Gracie, Robert Drysdale and Gunnar Nelson have declined the invitation as they are concentrating on MMA.

But some MMA tops are coming back!

According to Kid Peligro: “In keeping up with ADCC’s desire to avoid teammates competing against each other (and not putting forth 100% effort) in the event, current BJJ World Absolute champion Marcus Buchecha Almeida was invited along with his coach Rodrigo Cavaca but only if they agreed to compete in different divisions. Cavaca accepted to fight in the Under 99 Kg division while Buchecha will compete in the Over 99 Kg.”

Los productores del ADCC 2009 Barcelona, les expresamos profunda gratitud a todos nuestros colaboradores. Estuvo genial! Todos los voluntarios (staff o stuff?) trabajaron con seriedad, dedicación y la verdad es que si no fuera por ellos el Mundial de Submission Fighting nunca seria posible: Los montadores de la Arena, los runners, los vigilantes, los que se quedaron hasta después del final para recoger todo (e incluso limpiar)… Entre catalanes, gallegos, malagueños, portugueses, brasileños, suecos, alemanes y finlandeses formamos un equipo de elite.

Un agradecimiento especial a los chóferes: Javi “Psicópata”, Eduardo “Chape”, Toni “Super” y  Oscar (que con su van recorrió 1500 Km en tres días). También a Soledad Cubillo, por recibir a todos en el aeropuerto, y a las chicas de la taquilla.

We, ADCC 2009 Barcelona producers express a deep thankfulness to all our contributors. That was great! All volunteers (staff or stuff?) have worked with dedication. The truth is, without them, the Submission Fighting World Championship would never happen: The Arena-builders, runners, watchers, time-keepers, the ones that stayed until the end to clean everything… Amongst spanish, portuguese, brazilians, swedish, germans and finnish, we’ve done an elite crew.

A special thanks to drivers: Javi “Psicópata”, Eduardo “Chape”, Toni “Super” and  Oscar (witch have ran 1500 Km with his van). Tickets girls too, and Soledad, who recieved everyone in the airport.

Thanks a lot to Mireia Cabo and Hilton Hotel staff. With their constant and professional care, we could lodge all fighters with the comfort they need, and even more.

From Pabellò Olìmpic de Badalona we’ll remember the sympathy and disposition of Miguel. He was always available to any question or help.

Hell’s Angels España deserve all respect for the vigilance, security and organization in professional level. We’re grateful also to Doctors Guillermo and Emil for being always alert and for the quickness in the (very few) accidents we had during the venue. The sound staff needs a special mention for their unquestionable quality.

Garcia pulls guard on Nakamura. Garcia sweeps Nakamura, mounts directly. Switches to sidemount. Galvão shoots single and Avellan counters with a kimura! Garcia taps Nakamura with his guillotine choke after about two minutes. Galvao escapes the kimura and gets the win.

Gregor Gracie jumps to guard with Popovitch on top. Cobrinha pulls guard on Rani. Cobrinha sweeps Rani. Gregor attacks with  a omoplata. Cobrinha trying to pass Ranis halfguard. Cobrinha now attacking Ranis arm. Rani gets to all four. Cobrinha gets the kimura and Rani taps!

Womens semis start. Cyborg vs Penny Thomas. Penny jumps guard, but Cyborg just pushes her away.

Mendes finally sits up trying to pass. Both stand up, Mendes going for takedown, gets sweep, Mendes on Leos back, Mendes tries to jump to get the hooks, Leo ducks, Mendes flies over! Leo passing the guard. Mendes gets Leos back. Attacks with rearnaked, atacks the arm. Gets neither. Times up, overtime. Mendes shoots in. Leo sprawls, Leo takes down Mendes. But Mendes sweeps rightback. Gets Leos back again. Both hooks in. Mendes submits Leo!

Penny locks triangle, Cyborg stands up and gets out! Cyborg almost passing the guard of Penny. Penny rolles to all four. Times up, overtime.

Hanette Staack jumps to guard. Rosangela on top. Cyborg goes for leglock. Penny escapes and gets on top, tries to get Cyborgs back but falls over. Cyborg tries to pass and hits Penny with a knee in the face.. Times up, overtime. Penny wins by two minus points to one. Rosangela stuck in Hanettes halfguard for a long time.. times up, overtime.

Sayaka jumps to a leglock on Hillary. Sayaka attacks with another leglock. Hillary gets out. Sayaka attacks arm, and Hillary taps! Luanna and Laurance Cousin jumps to guard at the same time. Cousine attacks the leg, Luanna spins out. Luanna ends up on top, working to pass. Hannete Stack wins.

Mens bronzematches starts.

Saulo enters the arena with his gijacket, shorts and blackbelt. Cousine and Luanna gets a warning each, overtime. Luanna shoots. Gets back, but not hooks. Monson trying to pass Saulos guard. Luanna gets rear naked choke, Cousin face gets blue, but gets out! back to Cousins guard. Luanna passes, but Cousin retains her guard. Cousine sweeps, almost gets Luannes back, but falls down. Luanna working t pass. Times up, second overtime. Luanna, Cousin almost gets guillotine, landing outise the mats. Monson almost gets Saulos back, but no hooks. Both get back to their feet. Both Luanna and Cousin gets warned. Luanna gets takedown but lands outside of mats. Saulo shoots single, Monson escapes. Luanna gets Cousin back and a rearnaked, this time Cousin taps! Monson on Saulos back again. Times up, overtime. Saulo shoots, Monsom sprawls and spins to Saulos back.

Vinny jumps guard against Glover Teixera. Vinny gets back up. Jumps to guard again. Executes a beautiful sweep and ends up in mount. Spins for armbar, almost gets it, switches to triangle, switches again to omoplata. Glover stands up and gets out. Both back on their feet. Vinny jumps to guard again. Attacks omoplata, Glover escapes but looks tired. Vinny shoots in and glover spins for  Vinnys back, scramble and Vinny on glovers back, both hooks in. Vinny sinks triangle and submits Glover with an armbar.

Monson beats Saulo on judges decision. Saulo emotional, grabs ruce Buffers mic and announces his retirement. To everyones surprise, Lovato enters the mat limping, with his foot in a bandage and will fight Avellan. Lovato pulls guard right away. Gregor Gracie pulls guard with Nakamura on top. Avellan attacks Lovatos injuried foot. Avellan wins.

Rani injuried, going to the hospital and Leo sick, so bronzematch will be between Ryan Hall and Jeff Glover. Glover pulls guard, Ryan passes, scramble. Back on their feet. Glover pulls guard again. Ryan attacks with a arm triangle choke, Glover escapes. Nakamura still on top in Gregors guard, not much action.

Glover sweeps Hall and goes for leglock. Nakamura now on Gregors back. Gregor escaping and working for the pass. Gets a guillotine and mount, Nakamura escapes, Gregor in sidemont. Nakamura pushes him away. Back to their feet. Gregor gets takedown and passes the guard. Gets the back. Times up, Gregor wins. Ryan and Jeff back in their feet. Times up, overtime. Glover gets takedown. On top in Ryans guard. Ryans goes for Glovers back, one hook in. Glover trying to escape, but Ryan gets second hook in the last seconds and the win, 3-2!

Womens bronzematches starts. Cousin jumps to guard against Hillary. Female Cyborg and Rosangela fights stand up. Hillary almost passing. Cyborg gets singleleg. Rosangelo gets out. Hillary passes the guard. Cyborg and Rosangela into overtime. Cousin gets back the guard, attacks with leglock. Hillary escapes and passes again. Rosangela takes down Cyborg, but Cyborg gete back up on her feet before three seconds. Hillary wins. Cyborg wins.

Mens finals. Werdum vs Cyborg. Cyborg shoots in, Werdum sprawls and spins for back but slips off. Cyborg in Werdums guard. Cyborg passes and gets Werdums back. Werdum escapes, Cyborg almost gets triangle, Werdum escapes again. Werdum now on top, putting pressure on Cyborg. Werdum stays on top in halfguard along time. Gets warned. Twice. Almost passes, Cyborg defends, then Werdum passes the guard. Cyborg escapes. Both back to their feet. Cyborg shoots, Werdum sprawls. Werdum tries to spin for the back, Cybor attacks with triangle, but doesn´t get it and returns to guard. Werdum on top, trying to pass. Cyborg looks tired. Werdum gets the pass. Werdum passive, gets minuspoints. Twice. Werdum back to halfguard and passes again. One more minuspoint to Werdum. Back to halfguard. One more minus to Werdum. Both get back to their feet. Times up, Werdum wins a strategically smart but boring fight.

Xande vs Rinaldi. Rinaldi shoots for single, takes down Xande. Rinaldi on top in Xandes halfguard. Xande looks for the sweep, but Rinaldi stays on top. Rinaldi attacks with leglock, Xande escapes and now on top. Rinaldi attacks with omoplata, Xande escapes. Xande on bottom again. Rinaldi attacks Xande with a kimura from top. Xande stays calm, escapes and sweeps. But Rinaldi sprawls out and escapes. Stays on top in Xandes guard. Rinaldis tries headlock, Xande escapes. Xande sweeps. Rinaldi attacks with leglock. Braulio vs Galvão. Galvão sits to guard and gets a minuspoint. Braulio attacks with the same footlock he tapped Lovato with. Galvão  defends and almost sweeps Braulio, but chooses to stay on bottom. Braulio working to pass. Galvão looking for sweeps. Almost gets leglock, but Braulio escapes. Galvão gets sweep, but Braulio attacks the arm. Galvao escapes. Braulio attacks the leg, switches to footlock. Galvão escapes. Braulio attacks single leg, takes Galvão down, but no points yet. Galvão attacks Braulios arm. Scramble, Galvão gets a sweep. And working to pass, almost passes, but Braulio gets an inverted triangle, Galvão taps!

Garcia vs Popovich.  Popovich gets a takedown and is almost passing. Garcia retains guard and sweeps. Popovich with closed guard, Marcelo attacks with footlock. Popovich escapes. Garcia sweeps again. Passes and takes back. Popovich escapes! Garcia on top again. Popovich gets a sweep. Popovich on top. Popovich working to pass. Manages to neutralize Garcias bottomgame well. Popovich grabbing Garcias shorts repeatedly, eventhough its against the rules. Garcia gets omoplata. Sweeps. Garcia in Popovich closed guard, stands up, opens guard trying to pass, Popovich gets back to feet. Garcia jumps guard, gets minus. Popovich stalling but doesn´t get minus. Garcia trying to sweep. Popovich is now backing away alot. Popovich gets one minus. Popovich keeps stalling for long time but doesn´t get more minuspoints. 40 seconds left. Popovich passes Garcia guard! Garcia gets out. Back on their feet. Popovich escapes and backs away. Gets another minus. Time is up, fight should go to overtime. The judges removes the last minus they gave to Popovich. Rubens Charles vs Rafael Mendes. Cobrinha goes for a nice armdrag and gets the takedown. Both back to their feet. Cobrinha goes for the same takedown, Mendes gets arm triangle choke. Cobrinhas face turns blue, but escapes! Mendes attacks with heelhook from guard. Both back to their feet. Cobrinha gets the same takedown, Mendes the same arm triangle choke! Noone breathes, looks like Cobrinha is going to tap, but he escapes again! Cobrinha takes Mendes down. Return to feet. Cobrinha gets another huge takedown. Mendes gets a sweep, but no points yet. Now points starts counting, Mendes on top in Cobrinhas guard. Cobrinha sweeps, scramble, Cobrinha on top, but no points for sweep. Cobrinha working to pass. Womens finals start. Penny shoots in and Staack spins and gets Pennys back, both hooks in. Penny escapes, and is now on top, trying to pass. Staack is trying to get a kneebar. Almost gets it. Stays there for a long time. Penny Thomas finally taps! Staack wins by submission.

Sayaka Shioda vs Luanna Alzuguir. Sayaka attacks with leglock, Luanna trying to pass. Passes and mounts but Sayaka bridges and escapes. Sayaka now on top in Luannas guard. Luanna reverses, Sayako rolls for kneebar, but Luanna escapes.

Luanna gets guillotine., Sayaka escapes. Luanna sweeps again, is now on top trying to pass. Sayaka góes for heelhook, Luanna escapes. Both back to their feet. Luanna shoots in, goes to guard, almost gets a sweep. Luanna gets Sayakas back. Sayaka escapes, but Luanna got three points. Times up, Luanna wins!

Absolute starts. Garcia vs Bastos.  Braulio jumps to guard against Janne-Pekka, attacks the arm, Janne-Pekka taps! Garcia goes for takedown, gets reversed. Bastos on top in Garcias guard. Dean Lister jumps to halfguard, Vinny Magalheas on top. Vinny working to pass. Lister attacks Vinny with heelhook form 50/50 guard. Vinny gets out and passes Listers guard. Lister gets back to guard. Attacks with leglock, switches to sweep, Vinny goes to all four, Lister trying to get the hooks. Garcia and Bastos goes into overtime. Marcelo gets takedown on Bastos. Overtime between Weidman and Jaoude. Galvão pulls guard on Tom DeBlass. Weidmans almost gets the takedown, gets the back. Galavao gets the sweep. DeBlass reverses. Galvao tries to sweep from halfguard. DeBlass stable on top. Galvão gets the sweep. Weidman wins. Galvão defends a sweep passes and gets the back, both hooks in. Quarterfinals. Braulio vs Garcia. Braulio jumps guard. Garcia trying to pass. Vinny pulls guard on Weidman. Gets the sweep. But Weidman gets back to his feet. Vinny submits Weidman with flying armbar! Braulio gets a sweep on Garcia. Braulio passes the guard of Garcia. Gets Garcias back and a rear naked choke. Garcia taps!

Xande pulls guard on Galvão. Gets Galvaos back. Galvaos escapes, both back on their feet. Xande pulls guard, goes for a sweep and gets to the back of Galvão. Nelson and Avellan starts.  Xande trying to put the hooks. Nelson takes Avellan down, but no points scoring yet. Gunnar gets another takedown on  Avellan. Nelson gets headlock, switches to singleleg. Vinny attacking Nelson s leg, Nelson gets out and counterattacks with a leglock, Vinny gets out, Nelson gets singleleg, Vinny jumps guard. Vinny attacking Nelsons arm, Nelson spins out and gets Vinnys back. Vinny escapes and gets Nelsons back, Vinny suplexes Nelson, Nelson bounces up directly and goes for single. Quick notes and results from day one

Rômulo Barral quickly submits Denis Roberts with a footlock. Werdum submits Roger Lorent with a kimura from north&south. Saulo quickly jumps to halfguard against the much bigger Koji Kanechika working for the sweep. Gets it and passes the guard fast. After a long fight on the feet Thomasewski Janisz submits Antoine Jaoude with a rear naked choke after a long fight mostly on their feet. Saulo Ribeiro beats Koji by judges decision. Monsen jumps to halfguard and sweeps Karol Bedorf. Janne Pekka Pietelainen quickly submits Tom Erickson with an inverted heelhook. Monson beats Bedorf by points.

Roberto Abreu (Cyborg) working from his guard, trying to catch Tom DeBlass with triangles and sweeps but DeBlass looks very stable and calm. Asa Fuller submits Mike Martell with an armbar from mount. Cyborg almost gets guillotined by Tom de Blass. Cyborg escapes and wins by points. Radek Turek sinks a triangle and taps Rafael Davis with an armbar from the triangle. Xande sweeps Ilir Latifi. Vinicius Magalheas submits Rodrigo Henriques quickly with a heelhook. Xande beats Latifi by points.

Dean Lister jumps to guard and sinks a triangle on Andreas Olsen which forces him to tap. Perosh works to pass Pe de Panos halfguard. Perosh shoots and Pe de Pano spins for the back. Pe de Pano then quickly submits Perosh from the back. Glover Teixera passes the guard of what looks like a much bigger Vesa Vouri and wins by points.

Ricco Rodrigues is having a lot of problems against Tomasz Szczerek. Ricco is going for takedowns but doesnt get them. Ricco loses. Rinaldi beats Yoshiyuki by points. Galvão totally dominates Kassim Annan in the first minutes of the fight. But Kassim hangs in there bravely, reverses and almost passes the guard of Galvão. Galvão gets another takedown and wins by points. Galvão had to fight hard for that win.

Cris Weidman beats Dan Tabera by points. Bráulio takes down Yuji Arai, takes his back and submits him with a rear naked choke. Trond Saksenvik jumps to guard against David Avellan, who tries to pass. Avellan gets the the tap with a footlock. Tarsis jumps to guard against a huge Igor Praporshchikov. Lovato jumps to guard against Tom Lawlor. Tarsis is having a lot of trouble with Igor who looks very stable on top.

Lovato attacks with a heelhook but gets the sweep. Lovato wins by points. Tarsis wins on a judges decision being more active from below. Marcelo Garcia jumps to guard against Rodney Ellis and sweeps immediately. Passes the guard, mounts and taps him with a guillotine from the mount in under two minutes.

Bastos tries to sweep Jorge Santiago from halfguard. Brasco beats Gunnar Nelson on overtime in a very even fight.

Kron Gracie having trouble in the guard of Enrico Cocco, escaping Coccos constant leglock attacks. Santiago works on a kimura from top position as time runs out but Bastos wins by points. Azavedo passes the guard of Mike Fowler and gets sweeped just afterwards. Azevedo goes for a footlock and gets it. Kron gets the back of Cocco and submits him with a rear naked choke.

Milton Viera jumps to guard against Nakamura. Popovich gets a takedown right away, gets the back and submits with a rear naked choke. Milton Viera works for the sweep, but the japanese is stable on top. Ben Askren works to pass the flexible guard of Toni Linden. Askren finally manages to pass to north&south, then mounts and gets sidechoke. Nakamura gets Vieras back and advances.

Leo Santos jumps to guard on Yoshiyuki Yoshida and sweeps. Working for the pass. Getting the pass and then the back. Rani Yahya submits Kouhel Yasumi pretty fast. Leo Santos wins. Murilo Santana, winner of the brazilian qualifier jumps to guard, Gregor Gracie on top, trying to pass.

Jeff Glover gets a choke on Timo Juhani in less then a minute. Rubens Charles (Cobrinha) jumps to guard on Hiroshi Nakamura, working for the sweep. The World class surfer Joel Tudor jumps to guard with Renier Nicolas on top.

Cobrinha gets the back of Nakamura and after a scramble gets a beautiful armbar. Gregor almost passes the guard of Murilo Santana. Gregor almost gets a takedown. Tudor submits Nicolas with a triangle, repeating what he did to favorite Rani Yahya some weeks ago with the gi, showing that he is top level competitor in more then one sport.

Gregor Gracie passes the guard of Santana. Leo Viera gets a takedown on David Marinakis. Gregor gets the back of Santana and wins by points as time runs out. Leo Viera submits Marinakis with a guillotine.

Rafael Mendes sinks a triangle, tapping Jayson Patino pretty fast. Baret Yoshida and Justin Rader enters into a leglock war. Yoshida on the bottom with Rader in his guard. Ryan Hall beats Jeff Curran by points after a long fight that went into overtime. Rader now passes the guard of Yoshida. Scramble. Both get back to their feet. Baret initiates a takedown but ends up on his back. Rader gets another takedown and gets the win by points.

Killary sbmts Megumi

Womens division starting. Hanette Stack submits japanese Hitomi Haraiwa with an armbar. Cyborg, the female vesion, submits Ida Hanson with an armbar in overtime. Veteran Megumi Fuji goes for a nice flying armbar, but doesnt get it. Her oppponent, Hillary Williams, looks really strong. Hillary gets the back of Fuji and submits with a rearnaked choke. Luanna Alzuguir sweeps, passes and submits Ina Stefensen with a guillotine.

Penny beats Shanti

Sayaka Shioda beats Bianca Andrade due to minuspoints. Penny Thomas beats Shanti Abelha. Rosangela beats the huge Lana Stephanac after a tough and long fight mostly on their feet. Laurence Cousin beats Ana Michelle Dantas.

Mens quarterfinals start. Werdum pulls guard against Thomazs. Janne-Pekka Pietelainen pulls halfguard against Monson.

Werdum sweeps and working to pass. Gets the back of Thomazs. Romulo Barral jumps to guard against Saulo. Saulo working to pass. Werdum wins by points. Saulo almost passing the guard of Barral. Janne-Pekka almost gets sweep on Monson, that has to run of the mat to defend the sweep. Saulo wins by points and advances to the semifinals. Monson couldnt pass the guard of Janne-Pekka, but wins due to one minus point. Vinícius Magalhães wins with a beautiful flying armbar on Pé-de-Pano, maybe the fastest submission so far in the tournament.

Lister sweeps Glover Teixera from halfguard. Cyborg totally dominates his opponent Asa Fuller on the ground. Cyborg wins by points. Dean Lister almost has the back of Teixera but looks more and more tired. Lister is now loosing. Xande beats Radek Turek. Glover Teixera beats Lister, who looks really disappointed.

Galvão gets a beautiful omoplata sweep on Chris Weidman, switches to an armbar, but Weidman defends well and gets out. Tarsis jumps to David Avellans guard. Galvão fights to get a sweep from the halfguard. After a scramble Avellan gets the back of Tarsis and submits him with a rear naked choke with only one arm.

Rinaldi beats Tomazs Szczerek with an anaconda choke. Weidman almost submits Galvão with an anaconda choke from the top. Puts a lot of pressure on Galvão, who is starting to look really tired. Braulio Estima pulls guard with James Brasco on top. The fight between Galvão and Weidman goes into overtime. Lovato pulls guard on Bastos. Galvão almost gets a takedown but lands on the bottom. Galvão sweeps and gets the back, attacking the arm. Weidman gets out again. Galvao gets another sweep. Galvão wins by points after a really tough fight.

Kron Gracie vs Marcelo Garcia. The whole arena is cheering and chanting. Garcia jumps guard. Bastos almost gets takedown. Estima wins. Lovato on Bastos back. Azevedo jumps to guard and sweeps Nakamura. Kron working  to pass Garcia’s guard as Garcia looks for sweeps. Lovato gets takedown on Bastos. Garcia almost gets a sweep but Kron sweeps back. Kron goes for guillotine and Garcia passes to sidemount with the head still locked inside the guillotine. Lovato beats Bastos on points. Garcia frees his head and almost passes the guard of Kron but doesn’t manage to establish position. Popovich jumps guard on Askren and quickly submits him with a figure four footlock. Garcia gets a takedown but stuck in guillotine again. Garcia gets out. Scramble. Kron is all of a sudden on Garcias back, but no hooks in. Times up, no points awarded so fight goes into overtime. Garcia gets early takedown and working to pass.

Nakamura beats Azevedo. Marcelo “Marcelinho” Garcia passes and submits Kron with a guillotine from the mount. The whole arena is standing up, clapping their hands due to the great fight between Kron and Garcia.

Cobrinha gets Tudors back. Glover sweeps Rani. Rani sweeps back and passes guard. Cobrinha submits with a rear naked choke. Gregor Gracie beats Leo Santos after a tough fight.

Leo Viera in Ryan Halls guard. Ryan with his flexible guard almost gets a triangle. Rafael Mendes gets a fast anaconda choke on Rader. Rani beats Jeff Glover by points .

Leo Viera is having alot of trouble passing the guard of Ryan Hall. Fight goes into overtime. Ryan Hall jumps to guard again. Leo passes guard but cannot establish position.  Ryan rolls to all four, Vieira on his back. Scramble. Back to thier feet. Leo Vieira gets a tight guillotine and Ryan Hall is forced to tap!

Jacare vs Drysdale superfight! Jacaré gets takedown directly. Fight goes back to feet. Jacaré gets takedown again. Jacaré in Drysdales halfguard but cant pass. Back to feet again. Jacaré gets another takedown. Jacaré almost gets the pass this time. Drysdale retains guard. And back to feet again. Jacare gets a beautiful foot sweep, but nothing really happens as the fight hits the ground. Back to their feet. Drysdale being on the defense and a bit passive. Jacaré gets another inside sweep takedown, but they land outside the mats. Restart. Jacaré gets another takedown outside of the mats. Drysdale now goes for takedown, gets Jacaré back but falls to floor. Jacaré almost passing. Back on their feet. Little action. Drysdale goes for takedown again, gets reversed. Jacaré in Drysdales guard. Drysdale goes for sweep but doesnt get it.  Back to their feet. Drysdale shoots, Jacaré sprawls. Same thing again. Now Drysdale more active. Jacaré wins by points due to a takedown.

Interview with André Galvão

– Could you tell us a bit about your preparations for ADCC?

I’m training hard as usual, At night I do the physical preparation with Camões, in the morning I practice grappling with the help of Josuel Distak and with my practice partner and ADCC champion, Ronaldo Jacaré. Everything is just fantastic, and I hope to get back from Barcelona with  a new title to my career, if it’s God’s will. I’m feeling well prepared to do it.

– Are you doing any kind of special training in your routine ?

Yes! I’m focusing on the explosion and speed at morning time. At night I am also doing the physical practice according to my morning training.

– What do you expect from yourself in this championship?

I hope to win the Champion Title, but I know it’s not that easy. ADCC Championship  holds the best athletes.  Actually,  in my opinion, ADCC is a more complex and different competition. Thanks God, I’m well prepared and ready for any kind of situation on the mat.

– How do see your career now on days?

Every day I see that I’m in the right direction. I’m grateful for all that I conquered along my career, in the Jiu Jitsu World and MMA, where I have the best coaches and training partners, this gives me the motivation to seek my dreams and goals, I  still have a lot to learn, God has blessed me, and I´m thankful for all.

– How ADCC Championships will add to your career?

ADCC is a worldwide high level championship, it´s good to be included in a huge organization like this, and it always brings good things too, sponsorships, the growth of the athletes in the Fight world, etc.

– How do you see yourself inside the Jiu Jitsu world?

I always  seek to learn more and more, Jiu Jitsu gives me this option, there’s always something to improve, I like that, since when I began practicing I tried to evolve in the sport.

I believe I  have achieved a lot, and I see others Athletes conquer and involved.

– Any message you like to share with your fans and friends?

ADCC 2007 Champions Xande Ribeiro and Rani Yahia completed the final stages of preparation for their campaign in ADCC 2009. The training sessions with Ginástica Natural’s Professor Alvaro Romano involved breathing and mental preparation techniques developed by the professor for fighters.

“The breathing techniques, mental training and motivational training are part of the program. The program includes these techniques along with Ginastica Natural and has been applied with many top athletes with great success, most recently Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. Minotauro was first introduced to this type of training during his preparation to fight Randy Couture in UFC. Currently Rani and Xande are in the final stages of a similar program as they prepare for ADCC this upcoming weekend in Barcelona”, stated Romano.

Joel Tudor is also a brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under former world champion Rodrigo Medeiros. He has won numerous brazilian jiu-jitsu titles such as the Pan Ams and US Nationals. Due to his skill on both longboards and shortboards, on big waves and small, Tudor is widely considered to be one of the best surfers alive, and is also known for being unusually open-minded with regard to the diverse equipment that can be used for wave riding. For the past six years Joel switched his focus in surfing and has been training BJJ at Rodrigo Medeiro’s studio in Pacific Beach. Tudor regularly spars with members of Medeiros’ BJJ Revolution Team and has won numerous tournaments on his way to earning a black belt in a freakishly short period of time.

Some people say that, at the exact moment he was conceived by his parents, Jacaré already had one of the most important virtues for becoming the greatest name in jiu-jitsu: high quality genetics. Owner of contusion-proof muscles, elastic strings, cat-like reflexes, a lumbar that resembles hydraulic suspension mechanisms, ankles as thick as his calves, forearms strong as a jeep, Ronaldo is no lab champion. He was born with all these potential resources, which have been lapidated in training all these years. That which gym-addicts try to achieve with anabolism, nature gave this descendant of blacks and Indians. The talent came as the tip. But besides body and ability, a jiu-jitsu exponent must have true warrior spirit, which life has inserted in Jacaré’s life in strange ways, especially during the athlete’s childhood and adolescence: Fighting and living have always been synonyms for Ronaldo. Conditioned for bearing adverse situation since birth, he lived in poor areas of Espírito Santo until the age of 14, when he had to abandon his parents and run away to Northern Brazil:

“I got into some heavy shit, crime and stuff, and went to live with my brother in Manaus” Jacaré told Gracie Magazine in 2003.

The stranger Jacaré got around as he could in Manaus. He worked even as a car watcher before getting acquainted with martial arts at 16, when he began training the judo-like jiu-jitsu of master Henrique Machado. Dedicating to a sport in order to overcome the difficulties of a tempestuous youth turned Jacaré into a man with an obstinate soul. He learned in practice the need to have willpower in life, of struggling for one’s desires, among other teachings that many fighters know but in theory. He knows exactly what to do at the moments of difficulty, has the instinct conditioned to react immediately, knows how to fight under pressure… Actually, he not only can, he loves doing it!

“I get stimulated when fighting under pressure. I love when somebody tells me I am going to lose. It gets me energized. Gets me motivated”

There’s a triple foundation, composed of genetics, talent and warrior spirit, of current two-time world jiu-jitsu champion. Jacaré loves jiu-jitsu and, above all, he loves the way he practises it. He goes to trainings and tournaments just as happily as a surfer attending a tournament in Hawaii. This is his final hint:

“Find in Jiu-Jitsu whatever makes you happy and invest in it.”
